Spaceport America Design Team Selected PDF Print E-mail

LAS CRUCES, NM – A team of U.S. and British architects and designers has been recommended for award to design the primary terminal and hangar facility at Spaceport America, announced Kelly O’Donnell, Chair of the New Mexico Spaceport Authority (NMSA). URS Corporation, one of the world’s largest design and engineering firms, teamed with lead designer Foster + Partners of the United Kingdom to submit the winning design.

The selection was the result of an international competition for the chance to design the facility that will symbolize the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport. “The URS/Foster team presented us with a concept that blends sensitivity to the environment, cutting-edge technology and a stunning image and shape when viewed from high above,” O’Donnell said.

A prominent United Kingdom architectural firm, Foster + Partners has extensive experience in designing airport buildings. They are well known for constructing many high-profile, high-tech buildings worldwide. Company founder Lord Norman Foster said, "We are absolutely thrilled to be part of the dynamic team chosen to design the world’s first space terminal. This technically complex building will not only provide a dramatic experience for the astronauts and visitors, but will set an ecologically sound model for future Spaceport facilities."

With offices in the Americas, Asia-Pacific region, and Europe, URS Corporation is a full-service, global organization providing architectural and design services in 20 nations. In addition, they are a prominent provider of engineering services in New Mexico. "The URS team is very pleased to have been selected for this breakthrough project,” said Jens Deichmann, vice president of URS Corporation."

O’Donnell said the next step in the process is for the Property Control Division of the state’s General Services Department to negotiate a contract with URS and Foster + Partners. If successful, a press conference will be scheduled in mid-August to unveil the URS and Foster + Partners concept design to the world.
