‘Premier Competition of 21st Century’ Unveiled

Alamogordo Museum of Space History, NM – October 7, 2005 - Dr. Peter H. Diamandis, founder of the X PRIZE, which inaugurated the age of personal spaceflight, and Economic Development Secretary Rick Homans today announced that the newly inaugurated Rocket Racing League will hold its final races every year in New Mexico at the X Prize Cup.

Dr. Diamandis described the Rocket Racing League as an aerospace entertainment organization that combines the competition of racing with the excitement of rocketry.

“The Rocket Racing League will inspire people of all ages to once again look up into the sky to find inspiration and excitement,” said Dr. Diamandis, Chairman and Co-founder of the Rocket Racing League. Dr. Diamandis was joined in Alamogordo by Granger Whitelaw, Co-Founder and President of the RRL.

The executives made the announcement during Go. Experience Space, A Special Education Day dedicated to the next generation of space travelers, designers, pilots, engineers, space business entrepreneurs and educators. More than 1,000 5th grade students came to the Alamogordo Museum of Space History to interact with astronauts and engineers, carry out experiments and learn about the exciting career opportunities that are opening up to them.

“At this incredible day, we see the kids who one day will lead New Mexico’s future in space,” said Secretary Rick Homans. “Their enthusiasm is infectious, and we are committed to provide them with all of the encouragement they need to realize their dreams, just as Dr. Diamandis dreamed of the X Prize Cup and the Rocket Racers, both of which are coming to fruition this weekend in Alamogordo and Las Cruces.”

Similar to auto racing organizations, the RRL will organize, host and run competitions across the United States, with semi-finals in Reno, Nevada and finals taking place each year at the X PRIZE Cup in New Mexico.

Also at the announcement was Patricia Smith, Associate Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration. “The FAA salutes the Rocket Racing League on its mission to usher in a new era in aerospace entertainment,” she added. “We look forward to working with the RRL to secure all the necessary licenses and permits to ensure safe and exciting events for the public.”
